FUNDRAISING

Model UN Conferences are expensive.

Organizing finances for these conferences is one of the most complex jobs of a Samohi teacher advisor and student officer.  It is extremely time-consuming and stressful.  Although ideally the club officers would be in charge of all fiscal matters, in reality the advisor ends up doing the planning from year to year.  Often students drop out of conferences and the team cannot get a refund for that student's registration.  Please make careful note of conference dates to avoid this problem.

Samohi's Model UN Club is a TEAM.

The Model UN Club raises money to help defray the costs of the conference, but each student will be required to pay something out of pocket unless the entire amount is raised in advance.  For this reason, traditionally Samohi MUN team members who can afford to pay the entire amount should do so to help those students who cannot afford to pay any amount.

If the club members can afford to pay the entire registration fee in advance, the club's fundraising efforts can focus instead on team travel to an out-of-town conference.  One goal would be the UC Berkeley conference.  Another goal would be a team trip to the national MUN conference in New York, held at the actual office and committee spaces of the United Nations.

Incidental fees will occur.

Conferences have long lunch breaks, and not all students bring a lunch--so they will often eat at restaurants on campus or near the campus.  Parking costs money too.  Even Metro Rail costs money!  If the team can raise enough money, cost need not be a barrier to any student's participation in Model UN club.
